Changing the world through art.

Tsunami

I lived in Japan for three years, so this tragedy and ongoing crisis is on my mind. My hopes for safety and healing for the Japanese people.
We all know too well how the arbitrary forces of nature can affect our lives, and it seems lately, it’s been just awful in too many places on this planet.
They say that God doesn’t give us more than we can handle, and I’m praying that enough is enough. Peace.

America Blooms Every Day at Fairgrounds Coffee House

Here are my wall sculptures at Fairgrounds Coffee House in Iowa City. They are made of 365 plastic bags, one for each day of the year. I collected them from my own stash of plastic bags, and then found the rest by going door to door in my neighborhood asking if people had any bags to spare. I met new neighbors that way, and they were sure glad to get rid of some of their bags, too.

Christine Alexander, the owner of Fairgrounds Coffee House, told me that: “She’s never had to talk about art so much, since this display has been up [in the coffee house].” That’s a good thing, yep? She also said that many people think they’re Christmas wreaths. I feel that art is whatever you perceive it to be. Happy Holidays!

America Blooms Every Day

Wall sculpture titled “America Blooms Every Day”, created of recycled Walmart, Target and Hy-Vee bags, is on display at the Fairgrounds Coffee House in Iowa City through 2010. This “blooming” work is created of 365 used bags collected from my neighbors and my own stash of plastic grocery bags. The United States still consumes about 300-400 of these plastic bags per second. This triptych represents 1 second of consumerism.

Bur Oak Pendant

Here’s my latest bur oak pendant. It’s made of copper and signed.  The neckchain is a sterling silver wheat chain, 16″ long. It can be special ordered, or found at: Iowa Artisans Gallery in Iowa City, Iowa.

Feral Patron of the Arts

No catnip, just art. I'm going back under the table.

This is one of the visitors at my booth located in a barn at the 7th Annual Flower and Art Festival.    Very feisty little creature. I tried to pet the kitty, no luck.  The rain and cold didn’t keep people away from coming out to the festival. It was nice to see a good turnout at this fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity.  Thanks to all who came out and stopped by my booth, even if you were feral!

Sunflowers

Sunflowers

I give the jewelry I make a test run. I wore these two days ago, and I got smiles from about everyone that I made eye contact with. Since they’re big, (2″ in diameter), I also wanted to make sure they’re not too heavy on the ears. They were really comfortable. Made of oxidized copper. The earwires are titanium.

You can find these at Iowa Artisans Gallery in Iowa City, Iowa.

New Gallery

I’m pleased to announce an additional gallery where you can find my jewelry for sale, Brunnier Art Museum Store.
I visited the Brunnier Art Museum when I was a student at Iowa State University. I remember our class went to see an exhibition of glasswork by Harvey Littleton.
When the store manager inquired if I wanted to sell work at Brunnier, I remembered that amazing exhibition of glass, and thought yes, sure, I would like to be associated with that museum’s art!

If you are in Ames, Iowa, be sure to give Brunnier a visit. They have an impressive collection of decorative art, and of course you can find my jewelry in the museum shop.

Online Auction for DVIP Iowa

I contributed a pair of earrings I created for the online auction fundraiser for the Domestic Violence Intervention Program of Iowa City. While you’re doing some holiday online shopping this weekend, check out the auction gift items at Holiday at Heart. Use the bidding skills you’ve honed on Ebay, win big, and purchase towards a great cause.
Good luck and happy shopping!

Gratitude Design

Thank you all who gave me feedback on my ad designs! I have votes for all three. That’s the cool thing about different perspectives and tastes.  Now I’ll try to put these opinions into action.
